Cornelius Correspondence and Records, 1856-1864.

Three letters from Thomas R. Cornelius to his wife, Florentine, written while on military duty during the Yakima War. Two letters from David W. Porter, regimental quartermaster of the First Oregon Cavalry in 1862 and 1864. Also included is the regimental order book (January-March 1856) of the 1st Oregon Mounted Volunteers, located at Mill Creek, while in action in the Rogue River Indian War. Cornelius is listed as Col. Commandant of the Regiment and William H. Farrar is shown as Adjutant of the Regiment. The order book includes orders regarding Indian prisoners and the movement of the troops.

Thomas R. Cornelius, Oregon pioneer, soldier and politician, was born in Missouri and came to Oregon Territory with his family over the Oregon trail in 1845. The family settled on a farm on the Tualatin Plains, north of what would become the community of Cornelius. He fought in the Cayuse War of 1848 before going to California for the Gold Rush.
